The first week of September.
Children are excited to be back in school.
Parents have one more on their to-do list. Pack lunches for kids.
As a mother of two boys, I would like them to enjoy lunch at school, not the easiest task to have.
I learned by error and trialed a few simple tricks I would like to share.
1-Get your kids involved. It can be making a shopping list, talking about healthier choices, or buying something that they would love to eat. Baking muffins can be a great start. Giving children a bit of autonomy goes a long way.
2-Fruits and veggies. In every lunch box. Not negotiable. Children can choose what they want. It is different for everyone; find the way it works for your family.
3-Pack lunch straight from the dinner table. It is easier to cook more and after dinner is finished pack it all in a way that you can easily warm up it in the morning and put it in a thermos.
4-Picky eaters. It is the hardest part to find out what to choose. But it can be as simple as learning about your child’s likes and dislikes and finding options that will work. Some kids do not mind eating the same food at lunch over and over again. Do not complicate things.
5- Lunch time is a moment of pause in the middle of a school day that brings friends together. Keep it simple and enjoyable. Do not overpack. If you are concerned about the nutrient content of their food- you can compensate at breakfast and dinner.
The happy school year for parents and children!
